PGWP Alert: Canada Reinstates CIP Codes - July 2025 Update
Canada has just delivered a major relief to international students: the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility list has been updated again on July 4, 2025. This latest move reinstates previously removed CIP codes, allowing many students to breathe a sigh of relief.
What’s Changed?
-
On June 25, 2025, Canada removed 178 programs (CIP codes) from the PGWP eligibility list.
-
Just 9 days later, on July 4, the government reinstated those fields temporarily.
-
These programs will remain eligible until early 2026, when the list will be reviewed again.
-
Students who applied between June 25 and July 4, 2025, are also covered by this rollback.
“Eligible fields of study are linked to long-term labor market needs in Canada.”
What Students Need to Know
Criteria | Description |
---|---|
PGWP Eligibility Reinstated | Programs removed on June 25 are valid again until early 2026 |
Application Period Protected | Study permits submitted between June 25 and July 4 still qualify |
Long-term Jobs in Demand | Reinstated fields align with labor shortages in healthcare, skilled trades, education, and more |
Changes Apply to | Non-degree college programs (certificates, diplomas) |
Who Is NOT Affected?
If you're pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree, this change does not affect you. These programs remain fully PGWP-eligible regardless of the field of study.
Why This Matters
Canada's immigration strategy is shifting toward job market alignment, ensuring students are trained in fields where the country needs workers most. This approach benefits both students and the Canadian economy.
