Category-Based Selection in Express Entry: A Step-by-Step Guide for Canadian Immigration

Canada’s Express Entry system has revolutionized the way skilled immigrants apply for permanent residence. With the recent introduction of category-based selection, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is focusing more closely on aligning immigration with Canada’s labor market needs.

At Stanstead Immigration, we’ve simplified this process into an easy-to-understand guide to help you navigate the path to Canadian permanent residency.

Step 1: Show Your Interest

Start by creating an Express Entry profile in your IRCC Secure Account. This profile acts as your official expression of interest to immigrate to Canada.

Step 2: Enter the Express Entry Pool

If you’re eligible under any of the following programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program

  • Federal Skilled Trades Program

  • Canadian Experience Class

…you’ll be entered into the Express Entry pool of candidates.

Step 3: Check Your CRS Score

Your profile will be assessed using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which awards points for:

  • Age

  • Education

  • Language skills

  • Work experience

  • Other adaptability factors

Your CRS score determines your ranking in the pool and can be viewed anytime in your IRCC profile.

Step 4: Eligibility for a Category

Based on your profile, IRCC may identify you as eligible for a specific category, such as:

  • French-language proficiency

  • Healthcare professionals

  • STEM occupations

  • Skilled trades

These categories are announced by the Minister and vary based on labor market needs.

Step 5: Ranking Your Profile

Candidates who meet category criteria are ranked based on CRS score. The highest-ranking individuals are prioritized for invitations.

Step 6: Invitation to Apply (ITA)

IRCC conducts regular and category-based draws. If you meet the cutoff and category requirements, you’ll receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

Category-based draws target candidates who can contribute directly to sectors in demand.

Step 7: Apply for Permanent Residence

Once invited, you’ll have 60 days to submit your complete application for permanent residence. Accuracy and completeness are essential at this stage.

Step 8: IRCC Decision

IRCC will review your submitted application and make a final decision. This includes verifying that you meet the category criteria and completing security and medical checks.
